The first night after a move is easier when the essentials are in one clearly marked container. Instead of opening every box, prepare a small first-night box or tote that travels with you.
Step 1: Choose one visible container
Use a bright tote or carton and label all four sides with “FIRST NIGHT.” If you are hiring movers, keep it with you rather than loading it onto the truck.
Step 2: Pack sleep essentials
Add sheets, pillows, blankets, sleepwear, chargers, medication that you normally carry, and a change of clothes. Keep personal documents and valuables separate and secure.
Step 3: Add basic cleaning and bathroom supplies
Pack toilet paper, hand soap, towels, disinfecting wipes, a small trash bag, and any routine toiletries. A roll of paper towels is useful for spills and dusty surfaces.
Step 4: Prepare food and water
Include bottled water, simple snacks, a cup or mug, utensils, and anything needed for children or pets. Avoid packing temperature-sensitive food unless you can keep it cold.
Step 5: Add tools and light
A flashlight, batteries, scissors, utility-safe cutting tool, tape, basic screwdriver, and phone power bank can solve small problems. Keep sharp tools secured away from children.
Step 6: Photograph and check the box

First-night checklist
Sleeping items, clothing, toiletries, towels, medications, chargers, food, water, pet or child supplies, flashlight, basic tools, cleaning items, and important documents should be easy to reach.
